Hi All,
Hayle was an enjoyable weekend (18th May), weather wasn't brilliant and it's still
early so finding a campsite open was initially a challenge. The one we
eventually found was compact but facilities were very good and it was
quiet, most of the other campers appeared to be doing the race so there
was no issue with us being up at 5am on race morning.
Weather wasn't brilliant, rained from the moment we arrived in Cornwall
and through the night, we were lucky there was a dry spell whilst we
cooked and eat our pasta, the rain eventually stopped as we drove to the
race start - very lucky as it then stayed dry all day.
It was windy though - on the out route of the bike to Land's End I was
flying up and down the hills and then I realised why when I turn back at
Land's End, bloody wind was blowing a hooly.
Tough bike on this course so happy with 19 mph average.
Swim was ok by the way, basically an out to sea and back, sea was smooth
inshore, but a bit choppy 1/2 a mile out! Not one for the faint hearted!
Exited water at 32 mins so really pleased with that, not too keen on the
trog across the pebbles and sand dune to transition - and struggled a
bit with cold hands and feet in transition - all felt a bit clumsy and
uncoordinated.
Run was good, out and back route, I was wearing my Garmin so challenged
myself to do sub 7 min miles, easy on the way out with the wind behind
me, more difficult on the way back into the wind, finished run with
average pace of 6:50 mins/mile and run time of 1:27 so pleased with
that.
Overall finish time of 4:57, bit slower than last year (4:46), but
weather was a lot colder and wind was strong. Also run course was
slightly longer.
All in all an enjoyable weekend.
