Well done to all those who battled against the bluster in the inaugural Hungerford Triathlon this morning. The cycle was an out and back to Burbage which commenced slowly for me. Just when you thought I couldn't pull off any more stupid time wasters in transition, I got one of my plaits stuck in the neighbouring bike's brake lever whilst doing up my shoes and couldn't extricate my head for a painful 10 seconds. The new bike would have been great if the front gear shifter had worked - need a range of more than 10 gears to do your best on that course. I stopped at the roadside to scratch my head over the matter in East Grafton but….basically…. ROLL ON BIKE MAINTENANCE DAY BECAUSE I'M PATHETIC!!!! ! Luckily, on the way back the wind was so harsh only the best of the field would have been using the big cog anyway. It was lovely running past my house - twice - though and seeing Otto at the end and I'm very glad my season has started! .................. Abi Hebbard
Yes well done all, I enjoyed my race, the cold and windy conditions made it more challenging, but equally more rewarding - carrying extra fat reserves does pay off in some circumstances! , I was toasty on the bike wearing a tri suit and arm warmers - who am I trying to kid, actually I did take the arm warmers off for the run. I was happy with a 7.02 mins swim as I can't remember the last time I did any speed work. Average on bike was 20.4 mph, more than happy with that with the wind conditions - my new wheels are excellent, but a bit scary in a cross wind with the webbing on the spokes around the hub. I was comfortable on the run, didn't push too hard as the hamstring I torn two weeks ago has only just stopped giving me pain. Well done to Chris and Abi for your placings, I saw Chris on the bike and I'm sure he was breaking the speed limit on the A366 and how can anyone swim that quick!! Abi had a terrible cold and did amazingly well to turn up for the race, yet alone win her age category. So great race, well done to the MAD competitors who braved the cold conditions. .......... Jon Glyde.
Thanks very much for all your support Abs and well done to everyone! I have to say my mountain bike was lucky not to have been thrown into the hedge yesterday. Definitely on the look out for a second hand race bike, if anyone has one rusting away in their shed that needs a good home then let me know? .....Louise Mackenny
Great to have started the season off even if it was bloody cold and very windy! Slowish swim, but knew the bike leg would be tough. Can't believe they changed the route after dragging myself out of bed last weekend (with the clocks changing) to go round it with Jon. Disappointed in the bike leg, have to work on that. Please with the run and my knee held out fine. Only saw Jon in transition, didn't see Abi or Lou, and I think I saw this blur of red, white and blue that was Chris? (I was in my car by this time...) ...... Nail Cooling.
